IN MEMORIAM

 

This isn’t a complete list of those who received their wings at No. 31 S.F.T.S., Kingston, Ontario, and died in service. This honours the men whose names I have found in records.

Out of the earliest R.C.A.F. pilots trained at No. 31 was a class of 16 airmen (see pg 9). Out of this group, two were taken P.O.W. and four survived, and the following 10 lost their lives:

P/O Gordon Arthur Chamberlain R68115/J15078 R.C.A.F. 411 Sqdn. age 25 yrs. 16/12/1941 Missing while flying Spitfire #W3639 on a sweep over English Channel. Son of Steven H. and Minnie M. Chamberlain, of Ingersoll, Ontario. Commemorated on Runnymede Memorial.

P/O Harold Leslie Cook R67560/J15078 R.C.A.F. 12 Sqdn, age 25yrs. Wellington missing 10/04/1942 Son of Charles and Margaret Lillian Cook of Windsor, Ontario. Commemorated on Runnymede Memorial.

P/O George Elmer Douglas R68205/J4742 R.C.A.F., age 20 yrs 03/06/1941 Son of George William and Hannah Jane Douglas, of Stratford, Ontario. Buried in Andover Cemetery, Hampshire, England.

Sgt. Wilbert Nicholas Hergott R10349 R.C.A.F., age 20 yrs 12/06/1942 Son of Peter and Emma Hergott, of Waterloo, Ontario. Buried LEUCHARS CEMETERY, Fifeshire, Scotland.

Sgt Bruce Alfred Kerkhoff R102756 R.C.A.F., age 24 yrs. 23/09/1942 Son of Edwin and Lydia Kerkhoff, of Toronto, Ontario. Buried in Kemble Church Cemetery, Gloucestershire.

F. Lieut. Richard Blake Palmer R10311/J10015 R.C.A.F., 357 (R.A.F.) Sqdn 15/03/1944 He is commemorated on the Singapore Memorial.

F/O John Robert Spaetzel R103029/ J10016 R.C.A.F. 411 Sqdn 04/07/1943, Son of William Wesley Spaetzel and Nellie Edna Spaetzel, of Kitchener, Ontario. Buried in Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extention.

F/O Gordon Percival Waite R6752/J15181 R.C.A.F. 213 (R.A.F.) Sqdn 18/11/1942. Buried in Benghazi War Cemetery, Libya.

Five airmen arrived January 25, 1941 and trained with F.A.A. in Course 4: one was killed during training (J. M. Reardon) and two after returning home.

Sgt. Derrick Ellis Prior 166018 R.A.F. 263 Sqdn 15/12/1941. Son of Harry W. E. B. Prior and Amy Prior, of Colnbrook, Buckinghamshire. Buried Harmondsworth Burial Ground, West Drayton, Middlesex.

F/O James Wilson Wiley R62227, R.C.A.F., age 24, No. 1 (R.A.F.) Sqdn. 25.11.43. Son of Frederick and Jessie Wiley of Viscount, Saskatchewan, and husband of Nadine Wiley of Arden, Ontario. Buried in Cherbourg Old Communal Cemetery, France. (Name in Daily Routine Orders 18.2.41 as being fined $2. as partial compensation for damage caused to Battle Aircraft.)

A class of 33 trainees from 24 E.F.T.S., Luton, England, arrived at No. 31 on December 30, 1940 with a Many were Royal Navy officers who transferred to the air arm. Six of the class are on the FAA Memorial are:

Sub-Lieut. (A) Michael Holdsworth HMS SPARROWHAWK 17 August 1944. He was the second son of George Bertram Holdsworth.
Killed on active service off Tobruk while based at Malta, which was then under heavy siege, aged 21.

Lieut. (A) Llewelyn George Lloyd, age 23, HMS ST. ANGELO 24 February 1942. Son of Llewellyn and Helen Sarah Lloyd, Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire.

A/Sub-Lieut. (A) Thomas Gwyn Matthias, age 20, HMS VICTORIOUS 23 February 1942. Son of William and Margaret Matthias, Haverfordwest, Wales.

Sub-Lieut. (A) John Harry O’Carroll Nihill, age 23, HMS VICTORIOUS 12 August 1942, son of J. H. Barclay and Nuala Nihill, Mayfair, London.

A/Sub-Lieut. (A) John Sykes Pagdin, age 20, HMS GREBE 22 February 1942. Son of Edward and May Pagdin, Shipley, Yorkshire.

Course 4 arrived at No. 31 on 25 Jan. 1941 with a class of 36 naval ratings (19 from N.Z.) The following names are on the FAA Memorial at Lee-on-the-Solent for those with no other grave than the sea.

Lt. Cmdr (A) Antony McDonald Garland, D.S.C. HMS FORMIDABLE 16.04.45. Grad. 1941. Son of John William and Hilda Drake Garland of Chigwell, Essex. From the HMS Formidable website: “On the way [to the Pacific] we carried out regular sorties in pairs, attacking targets on the Sakishima Gunto, a chain of islands between Formosa and Okinawa. Here we lost our squadron commander… who did not return from one such sortie. It was a shattering blow to lose Tony, who had been such an inspiring and efficient commander since the squadron’s formation.” Commemorated on the F.A.A. Memorial.

Graduated 6 October 1941 with the largest group of Canadian F.A.A.:

Lieut. (A) James Ernest Gaunt,age 25, HMCS ASBURY 03.06.1943. 1830 Sqdn (Naval Air Sqdn) Quonset Point. Killed while flying Corsair JT116 which crashed on take off, North Kingstown. He was the son of Elizabeth Gaunt, of Toronto. He is buried in the Toronto (Prospect) Cemetery.

Lieut. (A) Robert Hampton Gray, age 23. Died 09.08.45 while leading an attack on five Japanese warships from HMS FORMIDABLE. He was the son of John and Wilhelmina Gray and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Victoria Cross posthumously. Commemorated on the Halifax Memorial.

Lieut. (A) Arthur William Sutton, age 24, HMCS ILLUSTRIOUS 1830 Sqdn. 24.01.45 Was flying Corsair JT593 of 1833 Sqdn. leading a strafing attack against a Japanese airfield in Java and was on his third approach when he was hit. Aiming his Corsair, which was on fire, at a hangar full of aircraft, he crashed into it and destroyed all the aircraft. Lieut. Sutton was recommended for the Victoria Cross. He was the son of Charles Samuel and Elsie Sutton, of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He is buried in the Jakarta War Cemetery, Indonesia.

Sub-Lieut. (A) Ross MacRae Wilson, age 22, HMS LANDRAIL Machrihanish 766 Sqdn. 08.09.42 Died when his aircraft, Albacore L7109, crashed in the sea while night flying at Shiskin, Arran. Son of George Stocks Wilson and Mabel Wilson; husband of Joyce Margaret Wilson, of Plumstead Common, London. Buried in Campbeltown (Kilkerran) Cemetery , Argyllshire, Scotland.

Sub-Lieut. (A) Francis Harry Squier, age 20, HMS HERON 27.10.42, night-flying at Yeovilton. He was the only son of Charles Westwood Squier and his wife Hilda; buried in Cowley (St. Anthony) Churchyard, near Exeter, Devon.

Sub-Lieut. (A) Robert Arthur Lawson, age 20. H.M.S. INDOMITABLE, killed off Scapa Flow 15.06.43. He was the son of Thomas Roy and his wife Hilda of Epsom, Auckland. His name is inscribed on the New Zealand Naval Memorial, Devonport, Auckland.
